The $7,500 lesson most businesses learn the hard way

Picture this: your company just printed 10,000 premium business cards with a QR code linking to your website. Three months later, you move offices. Phone numbers change. Your careers page URL gets rebranded.

Static outcome $7,500+

10,000 outdated cards become landfill. At $0.75 per card, that's $7,500 back in the printer's pocket. Plus design time. Plus shipping. Plus the meeting where someone asks "why didn't we think of this?"

Dynamic outcome $0 · 30s

Open your dashboard. Update the destination URL. Hit save. Every card you ever printed now points to the fresh URL. Total cost: zero. Total time: thirty seconds.

The QR code never changed. Only what it points to changed.

How it works

The 20-second explanation

Scan a dynamic QR and your phone doesn't open the destination directly. It opens a short link we control. Our redirect engine reads whatever URL you set in the dashboard and sends your phone there. Static QRs bake the destination into the pixels themselves. Once printed, those pixels are a one-way street.

Static QR

scan URL baked in Destination 🔒 locked

The URL lives inside the QR pattern itself. Fast, no dependencies. But frozen the moment it's printed.

Dynamic QR

short URL qrrq.io redirect engine 📊 log ⚙️ rules ✏️ dest.

The QR encodes a short link we manage. Every scan passes through our redirect, which logs it, applies your rules, and forwards it wherever you pointed it today.

Feature by feature

Static vs Dynamic - row by row

Capability
Static
Dynamic
Edit the URL after printing
The URL is physically part of the QR.
Change it a hundred times.
Scan analytics (who, where, when)
Zero visibility into usage.
Country, device, time, referrer all logged.
Password-protect the destination
Not possible.
Gate content behind a password.
Expiration date
Works forever, even after you wish it wouldn't.
Auto-deactivate on a date you choose.
Rule-based routing (country, device, time)
Everyone lands on the same page.
iOS to App Store, Android to Play, EU to GDPR landing.
Short, clean URL on print
! Long URLs make the QR denser and harder to scan.
Always a short qrrq.io/r/xxx.
Requires internet at scan
Any web URL needs internet, same as dynamic.
! Same as static; the redirect adds no requirement.
Cost to create
Free forever.
! Platform subscription from $9.99/mo with unlimited scans.
Survives 5 years of prints
As long as the destination URL still exists online.
As long as your subscription stays active.
Pick the right tool

When each one wins

Static is the right call more often than people think. Here's how to pick without overthinking it.

Static wins when the destination will never change
📶

WiFi credentials

SSID and password rarely change. One QR on the door handles every guest forever.

💳

Payment info / IBAN

Bank account details are stable. Static keeps it simple with no platform dependency.

📖

Book ISBN / product serial

Permanent identifiers live for the lifetime of the product. Dynamic adds no value.

🎁

Gift card codes

One-time-use codes with fixed values. No tracking need after the redeem happens.

Dynamic wins when change is inevitable or tracking matters
🎪

Trade show materials

The event ends but the swag lives on. Redirect from show-specific page to lifetime portfolio.

🎉

Wedding invitations

Venue changes, schedule updates, RSVP page pivots. Invitations already in the mail stay current.

🏨

Hotel keycards

Check-in to room service to checkout feedback. One card guides the whole stay via a single QR.

📦

Product packaging

Campaigns rotate, promos pivot. Old stock on shelves stays as valuable as new stock.

🎯

Marketing campaigns

A/B testing, seasonal pivots, and scan tracking are non-negotiable. Dynamic is the only option.

Real world

Three companies that chose dynamic

Boston $12,000 reprint avoided

The law firm that sidestepped an emergency reprint

A mid-sized firm in Back Bay relocated in mid-2024 after their building went under renovation. Their 2,000 embossed cards from 2023 would have meant a five-figure reprint if the address had been baked in. They'd switched to dynamic a year earlier. Updating the partner directory URL took two minutes.

London 1 print run in 3 years

The designer whose cards always feel current

A freelance brand designer refreshes her portfolio roughly every six weeks with new client work. Rather than reprint cards every cycle, she sends them out with a single dynamic QR that points to her latest portfolio page. Since 2022 she's printed one batch. Her portfolio has had 47 different home pages.

San Francisco Rebrand with no reprint

The 14-person consultancy that rebranded without touching a printer

Early 2024 rebrand: new name, new logo, new domain. The 3,000 cards from the previous brand still carried a dynamic QR. Updating the redirect to the new domain on launch day turned every card into a bridge to the new brand. The reprint decision moved from "urgent" to "next time we need more."

Common questions

FAQ

Do dynamic QR codes work if someone has no internet?

Every QR code, static or dynamic, needs the phone to be online to reach the destination website. The QR itself is just a URL. Static QRs don't magically work offline either; the destination website does.

What happens to my dynamic QRs if the platform shuts down?

qrrq.io offers export tools that let you download every QR as a static fallback with the current destination baked in. If we ever disappeared (not planning to), your codes keep working as static QRs pointing to their last-saved URLs.

Are dynamic QRs slower than static ones?

The redirect adds a few milliseconds, imperceptible to humans. The bigger speed factor is always the destination page itself.

Can I upgrade a static QR to dynamic later?

No. The URL is baked into the pixels of a static QR. You'd need to reprint with a new dynamic QR. That's why we recommend starting dynamic if there's any chance you'll want to edit later.

Is there a limit on how many scans a dynamic QR can handle?

No scan limits on any paid plan. The free tier includes 1,000 scans per month.

Can one dynamic QR point to different destinations for different scanners?

Yes. Set rules by country, device type, time of day, or referrer. A poster can send iOS users to the App Store and Android users to Google Play without changing the printed code.

Is there a security risk in using a redirect?

Dynamic QRs use HTTPS end-to-end. The redirect is visible in the browser before the final page loads, letting users see where they're going. We also scan destination URLs for malware and phishing patterns before serving redirects.

How much does dynamic cost compared to static?

Static QR generators (including ours) are free. Dynamic QR codes require a platform to host the redirects. Our Starter plan at $9.99/mo includes 50 dynamic QRs with unlimited scans. Most businesses recover the cost from a single avoided reprint.
